B. Short Answer Questions: (2 Marks)

1. What happened in Prem’s Village?

Ans: A religious dispute erupted in Prem’s village which drove people mad. The mosque or a temple was put to fire.


2. What happened when a religious building in Prem’s village was burnt down?

Ans: After the burning of the religious building, people started fighting with each other. They became mad and started arsoning the buildings. They started setting other houses of the village on fire, Prem’s house was also one of them.


3. What did Prem do as he saw his house is also burnt down?

Ans: Prem’s house caught fire at three in the morning. Soon after that Prem started grabbing his essentials like the Ganesha statue, some clothes and coins and ran away.


4. What did he do after running away from the place?

Ans: Prem ran for almost a day and night taking rest at regular intervals as his legs would start hurting. He then jumped on a train and after that bus. He does not have a ticket as everyone was also running away from the village.


5. Where did he reach and what happened to him there?

Ans: Prem reached Pambupatti. There he saw a gathering near a well, he reached to them and before he could speak anything, he fainted there.


C. Short Answer Question: (3 Marks)

1. Who does Prem find on opening his eyes? What did that person do for Prem?

Ans: After coming into consciousness, Prem found that an old man with shining black eyes, a white beard and whir hair was bending over him. The man fed Prem and looked after him. He brought the cool water from streams and sweets too for Prem.


2. What did Prem ask the old man?

Ans: Prem asked the man about the village as he had never seen such a strange village and villagers. Prem told the old man that in his village people used to fight with each other due to a religious dispute. Prem personally liked the new village and the people too.


3. What did the old man reply to Prem?

Ans: The old man promised him to tell the story of his Pambupatti village so that he can further narrate the story to his own villagers. He assured Prem that this would help in healing some wounds and dry some sores.


4. How did Pambupatti react to this?

Ans: The reaction of Pambupatti was quite anxious towards the words of an old man. Prem uttered that he won’t go back to his village to see the people burn with shame. But still, the old man advised him to go back to his village but Prem remained silent and listened quietly to his story.


5. The story the old man told Prem was about whom or what?

Ans: The old man narrated the story about the village Pambupatti. He said that once there were only reptiles in the village with no animals. Moreover, there were no teachers and schools in the village and Children were engaged in collecting fruits with their parents. The people used to live in a cave.


D. Long Answer Questions: (5 Marks)

1. How did the old man begin his story?

Ans: He started by telling the conditions prevalent in the village at earlier times. He said that there were no teachers and schools earlier and children were engaged in collecting fruits and living in caves with their parents. In the forest, there were no tigers, elephants or panthers. He further added that only reptiles were present like lizards, turtles, crocodiles etc. He told him that reptiles are identified with scales on the body and they lay eggs only.


2. What did the reptiles do every month? Who was the head of the meeting?

Ans: The reptiles of a village gather every month to have a meeting. The slow tortoises, excited snakes, quick lizards and moody crocodiles etc gathered to discuss something serious. The meeting was headed by a crocodile. The biggest crocodile among all was Makara who heads the meeting too. He was given respect by all animals as he was too powerful and strong and no one could dare to deny his orders.


3. What happened one time a week before the monthly meeting?

Ans: Makara informed the tortoises a week before the monthly meeting that they were no longer invited to reptile meetings. Ahistay, a large ancient star turtle with black and yellow patterns on its shell, became enraged at Makara. The meeting was attended by no one. Makara informed the meeting that tortoises are not invited as he doesn’t like them. But still, the other reptiles felt uncomfortable because of the absence of the tortoise. That’s why they were asked to leave the forest within a week.


4. What animals did Makara ask to leave the forest and why?

Ans:  As tortoises were slow and stupid that’s why they were asked to leave the village. On their back, they carried their homes. After that, Makara asked the snakes to leave the village as they were skinny and made weird noises. Other animals too agreed with it as they were quite venomous and killed others with poison. Then, he asked lizards to vacate the village. Makara only wanted his own species to live in the village. According to him, lizards were untrustworthy and bad as they change colour quite often and behave very strangely.


5. What were the consequences when all other reptiles except crocodiles left? What did Makara decide in the end?

Ans:  The number of rotten fruits and dead animals grew in the forest as tortoises were not there to eat them.  This led to a foul smell which made it very difficult for Makara as well to survive. The rats increased in their number because of the absence of snakes. Moreover, they grew bigger and bolder in size as well. The baby crocodiles were eaten by frogs and rats were everywhere. This made it imperative for the Makara to call all the reptiles back in the village. He realised that family is above everything else.
