The coronavirus outbreak has now become the most discussed topic around the world. With around 381,649 positive cases of coronavirus infection worldwide, several global cities have gone into complete shutdown. In India alone, there has been a significant rise in the number of positive Covid-19 cases. The number currently being 446, the Government of India (GOI) and several state governments have declared total lockdown in 30 states and Union Territories (UTs).

However, with the consistent and alarming rise in coronavirus disease statistics, students face the risk of delays in national examinations. For instance, the National Testing Agency is still considering postponing NEET, scheduled to be on 3rd May 2020. With no official announcement on the postponement yet, NEET aspirants are still uncertain about the dates of this examination.

In addition, the Covid-19 turmoil and losses have thrown aspirants off their usual tracks. They are utterly concerned about the fate of their hard work surrounding the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). However, to lay these worries to rest, students can actively follow a few precautionary measures for various reasons. These steps mainly ensure that they are medically fit to appear for this examination. In case a student contracts flu, she/he may lose an academic year.

5 essential tips for precaution against coronavirus

As the popular saying goes, prevention is better than cure. Needless to say, it is even more prominent in the present scenario. Moreover, these precautionary steps are simple and easy to follow. Therefore, NEET aspirants should keep in mind certain prevention steps mentioned below –

  1. Self-isolation or quarantine

First of all, the best way to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection is to isolate oneself from the rest. That is not to say that students are not allowed to interact with their family members inside their homes. As per the current definition of ‘social distancing’, there should be minimum physical and social interaction between people.

It is well-established that a viral pandemic such as the coronavirus disease spreads through social interaction. Therefore, students can save themselves from its impacts by maintaining a reasonable distance from people.

Moreover, the symptoms of Covid-19 are rather slow to show. Thus, it is difficult to guess whether a person is affected by this deadly pandemic or not at the initial stages. In addition, NEET aspirants should avoid close contact with individuals showing coronavirus symptoms such as fever, cough, and bluish lips.

Therefore, the simplest way to ensure quarantine is by staying at home. Furthermore, students should avoid visiting crowded places and coming in contact with children and the elderly. Using this opportunity, NEET aspirants can also engage in self-development processes, strengthening their preparations, and much more at home.

  1. Take special care of physical hygiene

Maintaining physical hygiene is one of the effective ways to ensure safety during these dark times. Therefore, students should wash their hands before and after eating food for at least 20 seconds.

Moreover, medical experts actively suggest using alcohol-based hand rubs or soaps after sneezing, coughing, or blowing one’s nose. Also, NEET aspirants should use tissue papers while coughing and sneezing to avoid spreading this highly contagious disease.

Additionally, individuals should keep in mind to use a sanitizer which has a minimum alcohol concentration of 60%. Students who have pets and who handle other animals should actively maintain this routine.

For instance, personal hygiene to prevent coronavirus infection includes taking a bath and brushing one’s teeth twice a day. However, students can also use wet sponge baths occasionally. Furthermore, students and parents should wash their clothes regularly and wear clean clothes every day to get rid of fatal germs.

  1. Disinfect and sanitize surfaces

Medical experts have suggested that individuals are likely to contract the coronavirus disease by coming in contact with contaminated surfaces. For instance, a person may unknowingly touch his/her face, nose, or mouth after touching a contaminated surface. As a result, the chances of getting affected by this fatal pandemic increase significantly.

Therefore, NEET aspirants should take extra care in cleaning surfaces that are frequently used and touched. Moreover, these surfaces include doorknobs, tabletops, and handles, among others.

Additionally, individuals should wear gloves while decontaminating surfaces of kitchen, counters, chairs, sinks, light switch plates, computer keyboards, and remotes. Also, they should not mix cleaning chemicals to avoid giving rise to hazardous and poisonous gases.

Finally, individuals should dispose of the gloves into designated waste bins after using them to disinfect possibly contaminated surfaces. As per the recent coronavirus update, following these steps regularly reduces the chance of contracting the disease substantially.

  1. Follow healthy dietary instructions

One of the most effective ways to decrease the possibility of coronavirus disease contraction is to eat healthily. It is a rather important time to boost one’s immunity against cough, cold, and fever. Moreover, ordinary fevers and respiratory ailments cause serious concern and panic among Indians due to the coronavirus scare. Also, since a coronavirus vaccine is yet to be discovered, eating healthy would be an excellent place to start.

Therefore, NEET aspirants should consume food rich in certain nutrients to strengthen their immunity system against this lethal pandemic. For instance, the consumption of food rich in Vitamin C at recommended levels increases the production of white blood cells (WBCs). Therefore, having lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruit is likely to prevent coronavirus infection.

In addition, students should also consume fibrous food containing Vitamin A and E such as broccoli, spinach, and almonds. Also, NEET aspirants can benefit from the nutritional impacts of ginger, garlic, turmeric, papaya, and yoghurt in battling with Covid-19. Furthermore, the healthy consumption of these food sources has been proven to increase immunity against such pandemics, as well as concentration.

  1. Wear facemask for better prevention

Medical experts have shed light on the fact that using reliable facemasks can prevent the symptoms of coronavirus disease. Thus, students should practice wearing N95 respirators and other surgical masks for better safety. For instance, if students have sick and ailing family members around them, they should definitely put on such masks for prevention.

In addition, if a NEET aspirant experiences coughing and sneezing, wearing facemasks is a useful idea. However, students should keep in mind that using these masks should also be followed by efficient hand-cleaning practices. Moreover, carefully avoid coming in contact with the mask after putting it on.

Finally, NEET aspirants should dispose of existing masks once they turn damp after use. Additionally, students should avoid using these facemasks multiple times to prevent coronavirus infection. Individuals should also be careful to throw used masks in covered waste bins after taking them off.

Thus, NEET aspirants can keep themselves and their family safe by keeping in mind the procedures mentioned above. Additionally, the state of lockdown imposes a degree of uncertainty on such aspirants. As the National Testing Agency (NTA) has not yet released any news on the postponement of NEET, students are still unsure regarding the official dates. As a result, there may be a lag in their morale to prepare for such an essential examination during this hour.
