Operations on whole numbers are the fourth chapter of RD Sharma And NCERT textbook. This chapter is prescribed by the CBSE. Therefore it is advisable for students to learn and understand  The concepts that are included in this chapter.

The most basic arithmetic operations on whole numbers are addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. In this chapter, we will learn about more detailed operations on whole numbers. Whole numbers can be defined as - the natural numbers along with zero from the collection of whole numbers. This chapter develops an understanding of commutative and associative properties. It explains predecessor and successor numbers, it explains what a number line is and how one can perform complex operations on whole numbers by using properties of addition properties of subtraction properties of multiplication and properties of division.

The chapter also gives us a proper understanding of commutativity of addition and multiplication, associativity of addition and multiplication, Distributivity of multiplication over addition, identity for addition, and multiplication. It explains various types of patterns in whole numbers. Exercise 4.5 in RD Sharma clears the concept of a magic square and how it can apply to whole numbers, it clears various other concepts needed for getting A good percentage in the exam. All the study material is readily available on Vedantu’s website where you can download it for free.

Properties of Whole Numbers are

  • Closure property

  • The commutative property for addition and multiplication

  • Associative of addition and multiplication :

  • Distributive of multiplication over addition

  • Identity (for addition and multiplication)

Facts about Operations on Whole Numbers

  • There is no 'largest' whole number.

  • Except 0, every whole number has an immediate predecessor or a number that comes before.

  • A decimal number or a fraction lies between two whole numbers, but are not whole numbers.

  • All natural numbers are whole numbers, but all whole numbers are not natural numbers.

  • Division by zero is not defined.

  • Zero is the identity for the addition of whole numbers. The whole number 1 is the identity for the multiplication of whole numbers.

  • You can add two whole numbers in any order. You can multiply two whole numbers in any order. We say that addition and multiplication are commutative for whole numbers.

  • Addition and multiplication, both, are associative for whole numbers.

  • Multiplication is distributive over addition for whole numbers.
