List of Indian State CM and Governor

It is not easy to remember the state capitals, the chief ministers of the states, and the governors of every state at the same time. You will need an updated list depicting the Indian state CM and Governor for memorizing them easily and to answer the questions in the competitive government exams. For aspirants, here is the information on how a state governor is appointed and the name of the chief ministers and governors of all the states and their capitals.

Who is a State Governor and How is he Elected?

As per Article 153 of the Constitution of India, every state must have a governor. As per Article 154, a state governor is the one who wields the executive power to exercise in a state with the help of his officers. The constitutional roles are mentioned and followed by each of the governors of the state. They also reside in the capital of a state and are appointed by the President of India as per Article 155.

According to the prime criteria of Article 157, a governor should be a recognized Indian citizen with age 35 years or more. He will not be a Member of Parliament or Legislature and will also not have any office or business. As per Article 158, he will be solely entitled to the allowances and emoluments offered by the Central Government. His role is to protect, preserve, and defend rightfully and to maintain the dignity of the Constitution and Law at all costs.

To be precise, the role of a state governor is similar to that of the President of India at the national level. A state is assigned a governor whereas a union territory is assigned a lieutenant governor. A candidate is appointed as the state governor of India by the President of India when all the criteria match.

Who is the Chief Minister?

A Chief Minister is an elected politician belonging to a particular party. He or she is appointed as the head of a state to handle the administrative functions as per the Constitution of India. The role of a chief minister is similar to that of the Prime Minister of India but at the state level. A Chief Minister is chosen for 29 states based on election results conducted at regular intervals.

Even if the governor is the state head, the executive authority remains in the hand of a Chief Minister. He or she performs duties and responsibilities with the assistance of a council of ministers. Hence, a State Governor is appointed by the President of India but a Chief Minister is elected and appointed by the Indian citizens.
