What is Fraction?

The term signifies a particular quantity of numbers that can denote a part of a whole object. The concept mainly deals with the divisions of a particular object into various segments.

Types of Fractions

Now that you have got a basic idea of what fractions denote, it is time to get familiar with the different types of fractions.

Components of Fractions

The primary two components constitute a fraction and they are the numerator and denominator. You will notice that a fraction is represented by two numbers, sometimes by three numbers, and there is a presence of a line between them. The numbers that are placed above the line are known as numerators and the numbers that are placed below the line are called denominators.

There are Seven Types of Fractions and They are:

1. Proper Fractions: The numerator of a fraction will be smaller in value than the denominator.

2. Improper Fractions: In this case, the numerators will be greater in value than the denominators.

3. Mixed Fractions: This type of fraction will consist of a natural number, which means any number that ranges from one to infinity, along with a fraction.

4. Like Fractions: In this case, the series of fractions will have the same denominators, which means the number placed below the line will be the same throughout the series of fractions.

5. Unlike Fractions: The series of fractions will have different denominators in each case.

6. Equivalent Fractions: There will be a series of fractions and the value of each of the fractions will be similar after simplification.

7. Unit Fractions: In the case of unit fractions, the numerator will be one and the denominator will be a positive integer, which means the value of the denominator will be greater than zero.

These are some of the basic concepts that the students must know before delving into solving the fraction equations and the rest of the thing that they have to do is simple calculations by adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing the numeric values.

Why Learning the Methods To Calculate Fractions is Important?

Learning the methods to calculate the fractions accurately, is very important for the students because it is considered one of the basic mathematical concepts that the students must learn in order to pursue their academic career in the future.

It is one of the equations that will help the students to solve more complicated equations in future because solving fraction problems teaches the students some important concepts related to the subtraction and division of numbers.

Why Refer To The Vedantu’s RS Aggarwal Solutions For Fractions (Exercise 2A) Exercise 2.1?

The RS Aggarwal solution for Class 7 Chapter 2 Fractions at Vedantu develops a solid conceptual base in students, which plays an important role in the latter stages of preparing for the competitive exams. The experts at Vedantu provided detailed solutions to the problems according to the CBSE prescribed method. Contents of RS Aggarwal Class 7 Maths Exercise 2A Solution

RS Aggarwal Solutions Class 7 Maths Chapter 2 comprises four exercises that cover all the concepts on fractions. The concepts covered are:

  • Determination of the greater or lesser fraction

  • Arranging fractions in ascending or descending order

  • Addition of like and unlike fractions

  • Subtraction of like and unlike fractions

  • Word problems based on the above concepts with real-life application

Let Us Look Into Some Examples:

1. Compare the fractions $\dfrac{5}{8}$ and $2\dfrac{7}{14}$

Ans: The fractions are $\dfrac{5}{8}$ and $\dfrac{35}{14}$

L.C.M. of $8$ and $14 = 56$

Now changing the denominators into L.C.M.:

$\dfrac{5 \times 7}{8 \times 7} = \dfrac{35}{56}$

$\dfrac{35 \times 4}{14 \times 4} = \dfrac{140}{56}$

Now, $\dfrac{35}{56} < \dfrac{140}{56}$

$\therefore \dfrac{5}{8} < 2\dfrac{7}{14}$

2. Atul purchased $3\dfrac{3}{10}kg$ of cotton and sold $1\dfrac{7}{15}kg$ of cotton to the dealer. How much cotton is left with Atul?

Ans: Amount of cotton purchased by Atul $=  3310kg$

Amount of cotton sold to the dealer $= 1715kg$

Amount of cotton left with Atul $= 3\dfrac{3}{10} -1\dfrac{7}{15}kg$

$= \dfrac{33}{10} - \dfrac{22}{15}kg$

$= \dfrac{(33 \times 3) - (22 \times 2)}{30}$         (L.C.M. of 10 and 15 is 30)

$= \dfrac{99 -44}{30}$

$= \dfrac{55}{30}$

$= \dfrac{11}{6}$

$= 1\dfrac{5}{6}$

FAQs on RS Aggarwal Solutions Class 7 Maths Chapter 2 Fractions: Download Free PDF

1. What are the most important steps to remember while solving fraction problems in class 7?

To solve this kind of mathematical equation that deals with fractions, the students must have a clear knowledge of how to calculate simple equations. Fraction problems are very easy to solve especially when the students know exactly how to solve simple equations like addition and subtraction along with multiplication and division. The questions appearing in the examinations are very easy to solve and mostly deal with these four steps of the equation.

2. Is there any tips to solve fraction problems in simple steps for class 7?

Since finding out the answer to fraction problems is very easy, the only additional tip that can be provided to the students is to be quick at solving simple equations. In order to solve these problems, the students must be very quick at adding numbers, multiplying the numeric values and also dividing a particular numeric by another. Most importantly, the students must be very attentive throughout the calculation process.

3. Can a fraction be considered a natural number?

If you want a simple answer to this question, then it will be, no. Natural numbers are used for counting purposes. For example, if we say that there are five apples on the table, that means we are using this number 5 in order to count objects placed on the table. That is why the numbers ranging from 1 infinity are considered natural numbers that are used for counting. But the value of zero and the other negative numbers, fractions as well as decimal numbers do not fall under the category of natural numbers. Because we do not use these numbers to count objects.

4. What are the things to remember while solving fraction problems?

While solving the mathematical equations that deal with fractions, the students need to pay special attention to various components like the denominator and numerator. These two are the primary components of a fraction and that's why the students need to pay special attention to this while solving the mathematical equations.

5. Is there any website where the students can get access to study materials in order to learn the concept of fractions?

Vedantu is a widely known website that is specifically designed for the students appearing for the examinations of class 7. Since the chapter dealing with the problems related to fractions has been introduced in the syllabus of the students preparing for class 7, the students can easily access all the study materials from the website and they can also download and print them as per their convenience.
