What are Algebraic Expressions?

Algebraic expressions are defined as an expression which is made up of constants and variables along with algebraic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division etc. Constants are such values which do not change throughout the subject. For example 5, -2, 3 are constants. The unknown values are expressed using alphabets such as x, y, z, etc. These letters are what we call variables. Any value that we place before a variable and multiply it by a variable is known as coefficient. For example, 5x^2 − 2xy + c is an algebraic expression. In this example, x and y are variables.

Here at Vedantu, We provide step by step solutions for all exercise questions along with the solution given in the pdf of RS Aggarwal Class 6 Chapter-8 Algebraic Expressions.  They are solved by experts and are explained in simpler terms for the students to understand and grasp the concept well. RS Aggarwal Topics contained in the Algebraic Expression Chapter for Class 6 Students

  1. What do you understand by the term algebraic expressions?

  2. Various different terms that are used in algebraic expression such as constants, variables, coefficients, degree

  3. Formation of different types of algebraic expressions

  4. Different kinds of algebraic expressions

  5. Arithmetic operations on algebraic expressions

  6. Like and unlike terms in algebraic expressions

  7. Solved and unsolved Numericals on Algebraic expressions

What are Like and Unlike Terms in the Algebraic Expressions Chapter?

The terms having the exact same coefficients are called like terms, and the terms having dissimilar coefficients are called unlike terms. Given below are some examples differentiating both the kinds of terms.

2xy, 3xy, 4xy, 5xy, −xy, 10xy, -44xy are Like terms.

whereas, 4x^2 , 7xy, -8xy^2, 6y^3 are Unlike terms.

What are the basic formulas required to be learned in RS Aggarwal Class 6 Chapter 8?

You won’t be learning any complex formulas but just 3 basic ones which will be needed in future as well, so make sure to learn and understand to apply the formula well.

  1. (a + b)2 = a2 + 2ab + b2

  2. (a – b)2 = a2 – 2ab + b2

  3. a2 – b2 = (a – b)(a + b)

FAQs on RS Aggarwal Solutions Class 6 Chapter-8 Algebraic Expressions (Ex 8C) Exercise 8.3

1. Explain with example what the degree of polynomial means.

The degree of the polynomial is the sum of exponents of the variables in the term if it has more than one variable, it is the highest integral power of the variables of its terms when the polynomial is expressed in its standard form.

For Example:  x^3y^2 + x^2+ y+ 10

  • Here in this equation,
    x^3y^2 has a degree of 5 ( 3 for x and 2 for y )
    x^2 has a degree of 2
    Y has degree of 1

  • 10 is a constant so it has 0 degree.

  • So the highest degree is 5, therefore the polynomial is of degree 5.

2. How are algebraic expressions formed?

1. An Algebraic equation can contain 1 term or more terms. If there is just one term, then it may be only one constant term or one term consisting of constants and variables. Example of an algebraic equation containing 1 term 4, -18, xy, -3xy etc are some examples of an algebraic expression containing just 1 term.

2. An algebraic equation that contains more than one term then the different terms of the expression should be separated using operations such as + or - .

3. Example of an algebraic equation containing more than 1 term.

5x + 7, 8x- 2, 3x+y+1 etc are some examples of an algebraic expression containing more than just 1 term.

3. What are the main three types of algebraic expressions used commonly?

The three kinds of algebraic expressions used are as follows:

  • Monomial algebraic expressions

  • Binomial algebraic expressions

  • Polynomial algebraic expressions

1. Monomial Algebraic Expressions

Monomial algebraic expressions are the expressions having just a single term.

Example- 2xy, 3x, 4y, 5x^2y

2. Binomial Algebraic Expressions

Binomial algebraic expressions are the expressions having two terms which are Unlike

Example-  5xy + 8, 3x- 2y, 2x^2+y

3. Polynomial Algebraic Expressions

An algebraic expression containing more than two terms is known as a polynomial.

Example- 4x^2+ 3y- 10
