Rational Numbers 

Any number in the form of p/q where q is not equal to zero is called a Rational Number. Rational Numbers refer to all numbers including natural numbers, whole numbers, and integers.

Example : (-5)/6 , 11/5 , 22/5 etc.

Rational Numbers have a long history from historical times. It is believed that knowledge of Rational Numbers is from long history but no evidence of this is present today.

Zero itself is considered a Rational Number as it can be returned in any form of an integer.

Properties of Rational Numbers are as follows: properties lie under the four operations of arithmetic.

● Addition of Rational Number

● Subtraction of Rational Number

● Multiplication of a Rational Number

● Division of a Rational Number

The Sum of two Rational Numbers is also a Rational Number. Eg: ½ + ¾ = 5/4.

The sum of two Rational Numbers does not depend on the sequence in which they are added; the resultant is also considered as Rational Numbers. Eg: ½ + ¾ = ¾ + ½

Zero added to any Rational Number the number does not change so zero is called the

identity element for the addition of Rational Numbers. Eg: 0+1=1.

Numbers can be represented on the number line according to their types the 4 types of

numbers that can be represented on the number line are as follows

1. Natural number

2. Whole number

3. Integral number

4. Rational Number

Rational Numbers provide the first number system in which all the operations of arithmetic mean addition, subtraction multiplication, and division are possible and their sum is also a Rational Number or an integer.

In a Rational Number, multiplication makes a number bigger and division makes a number smaller; the arithmetical mean operations are reduced to operation between two Rational Numbers. An irRational Number in math is any real number that cannot be expressed as the quotient of two integers or in a fraction as a numerator or a denominator.
