Numbers with a negative sign which are less than zero, are called negative numbers. Chapter 5 - negative numbers and integers is an extremely important chapter of the CBSE curriculum. This chapter explains two types of integers: negative integers and positive integers. It helps us to understand how to place negative and positive integers on the number line. RD Sharma has various questions that are related to positive and negative integers. Practicing them will give a student a complete and comprehensive understanding of negative and positive integers. This chapter also explains the addition of integers. It explains how the product of two positive integers will be positive, the product of two negative integers will also be positive, a product of one positive and one negative integer will be negative, and so on and so forth. Furthermore, this chapter explains the addition of integers on a number line, it also explains how to subtract integers with the help of a number line. These are the many concepts that are extremely important for a student to master, as it is only after understanding these concepts one can move forward for further studies. Practice questions by RD Sharma help the students to achieve their goal to get 95% in examinations. The solutions to these practice questions are available on Vedantu’s website. The link is easily accessible and is free for all students.

## Important Concepts of this Chapter

• You add when you have two positive integers like (+3) + (+2) = +5 (= 3 + 2). You also add when you have two negative integers, but the answer will take a minus (–) sign like (–2) + (–1) = – (2+1) = –3.

• When there is one positive and one negative integer, the subtraction will take place and the sign should be of a greater number. (Ignoring the signs of the numbers decides which is bigger).

• Numbers such as 3 and – 3, 2, and – 2, when added to each other give the sum zero. These are known as the additive inverse of each other.

• To subtract an integer from another integer it will be just enough to add the additive inverse of the integer that is being subtracted, to the other integer.

• The collection of numbers..., – 4, – 3, – 2, – 1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, ... are called integers. So, – 1, – 2, – 3, – 4, ... called negative numbers are negative integers and 1, 2, 3, 4, ... called positive numbers are the positive integers.

## FAQs on RD Sharma Class 6 Solutions Chapter 5 - Negative Numbers and Integers (Ex 5.6) Exercise 5.6

1. Why are negative numbers and integers an important chapter for Class 6 students?

Negative numbers and integers are an extremely important chapter in the CBSE curriculum. Students are advised to study this chapter in-depth so that the many important concepts can be cleared for further studies. To make the learning process easy, mathematics teachers at Vedantu have done extensive research and curated study material for the students of class six. It includes important topics such as how to represent negative and positive integers on a number line. The subtraction is the same as the addition of its additive inverse.

2. Where are the RD Sharma solutions Class 6 Chapter 5 available for free?

The RD Sharma solutions for the chapter negative numbers and integers are available on Vedantu’s website the link is available for free anyone with access to the internet can download the PDF for the solutions of the RD Sharma book of class six. With everything getting digitized the study material is easily available and helps students to simplify the concepts and helps in better learning and understanding of the chapters such as this one. These exercises will simplify mathematics for you and the solutions will keep you in check of your progress.

3. What are the important topics covered in negative numbers and integers?

The important topics covered in negative numbers and integers are as follows- how the product of two positive integers will be positive, the product of two negative integers will also be positive, a product of one positive and one negative integer will be negative, and so on and so forth. Furthermore, this chapter explains the addition of integers on a number line, it also explains how to subtract integers with the help of a number line.

4. What are the types of integers?

There are two types of integers. Negative integers and positive integers. When two positive integers are added, we get a positive integer. When two negative integers are added, we get a negative integer. When one positive and one negative integer are added we subtract them as whole numbers by considering the numbers without their sign and then put the sign of the bigger number with the subtraction obtained. The bigger integer is decided by ignoring the signs of the integers.

5. Is zero considered as  a whole number?

Yes, there are many whole numbers such as 0, one, two, three, four… And so on and so forth. Negative numbers are not called whole numbers. All natural numbers are called whole numbers while not all whole numbers and natural numbers. This concept can be further cleared by studying negative numbers and integers in depth. By solving the practice questions given in RD Sharma’s book of class six a student will be able to ace this concept without any difficulty.
