Overview of RD Sharma Class 6 Solutions Chapter 5

RD Sharma Class 6 Chapter 5 discusses Negative Numbers and Integers through concise and crisp explanations. The chapter also explores the implications of adding and subtracting negative integers and positive integers (whole and natural numbers) using the number line. There is a question bank as well as objective type questions given after the chapter.

As we have learnt before, Integers can be defined as a number that is whole or a natural number. It does not include decimals or fractions. We are aware that one less than the given number is the predecessor and one more than the given number is the successor.

Integers can be divided into two types:

  • Positive integers- These integers are included in the right side of the number line. These integers can be whole numbers and natural numbers. For example, 1, 2, 3, 4….. are positive integers.

  • Negative Integers- These integers are included on the left side of the number line as they are less than zero. But here, we add the negative sign (-) beside the number. They are neither  whole numbers nor natural numbers. For example, -4, -3, -2. -1…. are negative integers.

The number line represents both the negative and the positive integers on either side of zero which is the starting point of the number line. The addition and subtraction of the numbers/integers are done using the number line.

FAQs on RD Sharma Class 6 Solutions Chapter 5 - Negative Numbers and Integers (Ex 5.3) Exercise 5.3

1. How do we add or subtract numbers using the number line?

Let us take an example - 4+6=10. Firstly, Students must simplify the expression. Then they must locate the first digit (4) on the number line, as per the question. Adding the second digit (6) means we need to move the point of the number of units, i.e., 6 in this case, to the right. After doing so, we end up at 10.  For subtraction as well,  we need to choose the higher digit as the starting point and jump the number of units (lower number) and then reach the answer.

2. What are the two conditions in terms of the use of (+) and (-) before integers?

Whenever we add or subtract positive and negative integers, we need to check the signs and then continue with the process. When we have the same signs, we add and put the same signs. If we add two positive integers, we get a positive value. When we add two negative numbers we get a negative value. If we add a positive and a negative integer, then the sign changes according to the value. For example 6-3= 3 but 6- (-3)=6+3=9

3. What does RD Sharma Class 6 Solutions Chapter 5 - Negative Numbers and Integers (Ex 5.3) Exercise 5.3 contain?

RD Sharma Class 6 Solutions Chapter 5 - Negative Numbers and Integers (Ex 5.3) Exercise 5.3 contains eight different types of questions. Some of the questions include finding the additive inverse of the integers, finding the successors and predecessors of the given integers, checking the true statements with proofs, mentioning all the integer values less than the given number, completing the table through questions related to it and finding the value of x using the given expressions. All these questions must be practised regularly.

4. Where can we find RD Sharma Class 6 Solutions Chapter 5 - Negative Numbers and Integers (Ex 5.3) Exercise 5.3?

5. Are there any objective questions given in RD Sharma Class 6 Chapter 5 - Negative Numbers and Integers (Ex 5.3) Exercise 5.3?

Yes. There are objective-based questions in RD Sharma Class 6 Chapter 5 - Negative Numbers and Integers. These questions include numerical that test the student’s knowledge and analysis power of the chapter. Objective questions are extremely scoring and hence students must not skip this part while revising the chapter ahead of the exam. Due to this, students must study the chapter very carefully and make short notes if possible so that they can skim through the notes before the test.
