Hint:A force is a physical quantity that influences the motion of a body. there are many effects that a force can cause to a body. The most basic effect is that a force can move a stationary body.
Complete step by step answer:
Let us first understand what a force is.
A force is a physical quantity that influences the motion of a body. Now, what does the motion of a body mean? Motion of somebody is related to the change in its position with time. So, when we see a body changing its position, we say that the body is in motion.
Let us discuss the effects of a force on a body.
(i) Force can move a body.
The basic effect of a force is that it can move a body or in other words, to move a body we have to apply some force on it. The simplest example of this is when we push objects. To push or pull objects, we have to apply a force on them with help of some means and due to the applied force the objects move.
(ii) Force can change the velocity of a body.
Suppose a body is moving uniform motion, i.e. with a uniform velocity. If we apply a force on this moving body, its velocity will change. For example, when we kick while moving football, its velocity increases.
(iii) Force can stop a moving body.
Force can also stop a moving body, if the force is applied in the direction opposite to that of the moving body. The best example of this situation is when a fielder in a cricket match catches the moving ball he applies a force in the opposite direction and then tries to stop the ball.
(iv) Force can change the direction of a moving body
This is easy to understand as we have already discussed that the force can change the velocity of a body. Velocity is a quantity along with direction. Therefore, if a force can change the velocity of a body, then it can also change its direction of motion.
Eg. When we throw a ball on a wall, the wall exerts a force on the ball and changes the direction of the motion of the ball.
(v) Force can change the shape of a body.
A force not only affects the motion of a body, it also changes the shape of the body. For example,
when we exert force on a rubber band from both the directions, we see that the band stretches. This means that due to the force, its shape changes.
Note:In the above section we discussed the effects of the force. However, note that the motion of a body is influenced only when the net force acting on is non zero. This is because force is a vector quantity and when two more forces act on a body, they may cancel out each other such that the resultant force on the body is zero.
Therefore, the above information is related to a net unbalanced force acting on a body.
