At the end of the chapter, a beautiful poem has been given “The Ant and the Cricket”. In a true sense, it is a fable. Students will learn what is a fable here and the practice exercise provided at the end of the chapter helps the student to test their own knowledge. 


Chapter 2: The Tsunami    

The chapter opens by talking about a natural calamity that caused huge destruction and loss of life and property. At the end of the chapter exercises like fill in the blanks, finding out active and passive voices are given. 


The chapter is followed by a beautiful poem called “Geography” that talks about the author's experience viewing his city from 10000 feet above the ground in the course of an air trip by plane. 


Chapter 3: Glimpses of the Past

Chapter 4: Bepin Choudhury’s Lapse of Memory

A Satyajit Ray story with a surprise ending that brings in its wake the much-needed psychological relief to the sophisticated executive beleaguered by a conspiracy, which is a humorous take after all. Apart from the comprehension exercises given at the end of each unit, there are some descriptive questions given at the end of the chapter, fill in the blanks, and some reading and writing exercises. 


After this chapter, comes a poem called The Last Bargain. It is a poem about a person looking for work. And at the last, he was hired by a child. At the end of the poem, students will solve an exercise.


Chapter 5: The Summit Within 

The chapter reveals the experience of Mr. H.P.S. Ahluwalla climbed Mount Everest in 1965. Learn about his experience, challenges, and feelings while he was climbing through this chapter. The chapter is followed by a poem called “The School Boy”. In this poem, the schoolboy is not a happy child. What makes him unhappy? Chapter 1: The Ant and the Cricket 

This poem is a story about an ant who works hard day and night in the summer season, to store enough food for the winter season. Cricket, on the other hand, makes merry by dancing and singing in the summer season. The cricket ends up starving during the winter season as he did not utilize his time and resources during summer to accumulate sufficient food for the winter season.


Chapter 2: Geography Lessons

The poet of this poem, Zulfikar Ghose, was born in India but after partition, he got settled in Pakistan. Now, he resides in the USA. He finds that the cities are not well-planned when he sees from above in a jet. Then, he goes on to talk about how important water is, for different purposes like agriculture, business, and transport. As the jet moves higher, he reflects and concludes that people have set boundaries among each other and there is a growing hatred among them.


Chapter 3: Macavity - The Mystery Cat

This poem talks about the mysterious qualities of a cat named Macavity. He is mysterious and escapes the crime scene every time. He has broken almost every human law.


Chapter 4: The Last Bargain

This poem talks about a man who is in search of a job. But, during his search, he comes to learn some important lessons. The central theme of this poem is that we do not need money, beauty, or power to attain everlasting happiness. Innocence and freedom can make a person satisfied and happy.


Chapter 5: The School Boy

The poet in this poem is a schoolboy who is not happy. He does not like going to school and is not interested in studying. He feels that he is trapped like a caged bird and his childhood is crumpled. He likes birds, trees, and mornings. He further advises parents to not deprive their kids of the freedom and happiness that they deserve. Our world will be filled with sorrow if we have unhappy children.


Chapter 6: This is Jody’s Fawn

This is a very touching poem about a child named Jody and his consciousness. When a snake bites his father, he kills a doe to save his father by using the heart and liver to draw out the poison. But he is concerned about the fawn left behind. He convinces his parents to search for the fawn and bring it back to their home. He even goes on to say that he will feed the fawn with his own share of milk. Later, they find the fawn in the forest and bring it home to raise it. Jody is happy that the fawn is safe and he can feed him now.


Chapter 7: When I set out for Lyonnesse

The poet of this poem Thomas Hardy talks about the time when he visited a parish church as an architect. He went to supervise the restoration of the church. People noticed two things about him while he was returning, a new glow in his eyes and a crumpled piece of paper in the pocket of his coat.


Chapter 8: On the Grasshopper and the Cricket

The grasshopper and the cricket are used to symbolize the summer and the winter seasons. This poem talks about how the poetry of the song goes like a continuous song from summer to the winter season.
