Eligibility Criteria for Admission to NITs

Admission to B.Tech programs is granted on the basis of candidates’ AIR ranks in JEE Main. Additionally, candidates seeking admission to NITs must also secure at least 75 percent or be in the top 20 percentile (for the general category) in their Class 12 Board exams or any equivalent examination conducted by any recognized board. Candidates from SC/ST category get relaxation to 65 percent.

Thus, the NIT admission process is solely merit-based. After securing a good rank in JEE Main, the qualified students are then allotted seats through the counselling sessions conducted by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). Depending on the availability of the seats in the students’ preferred institute, they are granted admission.

For admission to M.Tech, applicants require a valid score in the GATE exam while seat allotment is managed through CCMT (Centralized Counseling for M. Tech/M. Arch/M. Plan/M. Des).

According to the current NIT admission policy, half of the total seats are reserved for students who have completed their Class 12 from that particular state where the NIT is located. The remaining half is allocated based on the AIR (All India Ranks) secured by candidates from different states.

Best NIT in India Cut-off for B.Tech

JEE Main cut-off for NITs depends on the number of candidates appearing in the exam, the difficulty level of the exam, the total number of candidates who have applied for admission in NITs, and the total seats available. JoSAA is responsible for releasing the category-wise and round-wise opening and closing cutoffs for admission to B.Tech programs in NITs.
