JEE Main Reservation Criteria 2024

JEE Main 2024 is one of the most prestigious and esteemed examinations for candidates looking to enrol in an engineering institute. After the change in its governing body, NTA has begun to conduct tests in India since last year. Along with its modified criteria, JEE Main 2024 reservation criteria have also been declared. It is based on candidates who are from backward communities/classes (OBC) and those from Scheduled Castes or Tribe (SC/ST).

The specific applicants who fall under the above-mentioned categories are provided with certain benefits over the common (general) category. It is primarily in qualifying score, cut-off percentage and in the distribution of seats. Candidates belonging to a particular group (category) need to produce the necessary documents as evidence of their reservation in those specific categories.

About EWS

EWS or Economically Weaker Section is a category of people that do not belong to any of the reserved categories and have an annual income of less than 8 lakh rupees. That means any student who falls under SC ST or OBC category is not eligible for the EWS quota. The Government of India has provided this scheme for students with weaker Economic backgrounds so that they can avail good educational facilities. 

Who is Eligible for EWS Quota in JEE 2024?

The following people can avail of EWS quota in JEE:

  • The family should have a gross annual income under Rs. 8 Lakh.

  • The candidate should not belong to any of the reservation categories such as

  • SC, ST and OBC

  • And the candidate should possess an ‘Income and Asset certificate’ issued by any government authority.

Who Cannot Avail of the EWS Quota?

Below are the conditions for which one cannot access the EWS benefits:

  • Any candidate whose family owns 5 acres or more agricultural land.

  • If the candidate owns a residential flat of 1000 square feet and above.

  • If candidates’ parents own any residential plot of 100 square yards and above.

  • If candidates’ parents own any residential plot of 200 square yards and above other than the one that is notified to the municipality.

Documents Required for EWS Category

For applying to the EWS quota for JEE, the candidate needs an ‘Income and Asset Certificate’. This certificate can be obtained from the following people:

  • District Magistrate/Additional District Magistrate/ Collector/ Deputy Commissioner/Additional Deputy Commissioner/ 1st Class Stipendiary Magistrate/ Sub-Divisional Magistrate/ Taluka Magistrate! Executive Magistrate/ Extra Assistant Commissioner

  • Chief Presidency Magistrate/Additional Chief Presidency Magistrate/ Presidency Magistrate

  • Revenue Officer not below the rank of Tehsildar

  • Sub-Divisional Officer or the area where the candidate and/or his family normally resides

Primary Features of Reservation Criteria for JEE Main 2024

  1. Specific candidates to be granted the reserved seats will be determined by JEE Main scores. GoI has set specific guidelines for reservation criteria, which will be followed by the NTA (National Test Agency).

  2. Reservation benefits will only be provided to those categories which will be officially issued by the Indian Government in the central list.

  3. In all reputed engineering colleges like NITs, GFTIs, etc., reservation criteria will be solely applicable based on the scores secured by candidates in 2024 JEE Main.

Reservation for Women Applicants

  • Majority of the engineering colleges in India reserve a minimum of 5% seat for women. All a female applicant needs to do is apply through the Women Quota System.

  • Women who fall under PWD category (People with Disability) get a new 3% seat reservations in all the topmost Indian engineering colleges.

What is the Procedure to Claim JEE Main Reservation of 2024?

  • Interested and eligible applicants have to fill up a form (JEE Main 2024) by providing with all personal details of their category.

  • Applicants need to show proof of their reservation category with all the necessary documents like the reservation certificate provided by the GOI. The candidates will need to carry all those documents during their JEE Main counseling process.

  • If by any chance an applicant is unable to show any proof of the official documents, his/her reservation will not be considered. He or she will then fall under the General category.

What Documents are Required for JEE Main Reservations?

Applicants will require the following two official documents while going for the interview or counseling process in any of the top engineering institutes. 

  • The reservation certificate which has been issued by any competent authority under the Government of India (GOI).

  • Disability certificate for candidates who fall under the PWD category.

Reservations /Quotas Based on the State of Residence 

Apart from the reservations mentioned above for JEE Main, all engineering colleges and institutes are further divided into two quotas. They are – Home State Quota (HS) and the Other State Quota (OS).

  • Home State Quota: It is applicable for candidates who have passed the 12th board examination or any other equivalent examination from a state.

  • Other State Quota: This one incorporates all the states and the Union territories except the home state or province the candidate has applied from.

Persons with Disabilities (PwD) under JEE Main Reservation Criteria 2024

Candidates with disability above 40% or more as verified by the certifying authority can claim for benefits from JEE Main 2024 reservation criteria. Below, they can find the categories of specified disabilities to be considered under the PwD category:

  • Blindness and low vision

  • Deaf and hard of hearing

  • Locomotor disability including cerebral palsy, leprosy cured, dwarfism, acid attack victims and muscular dystrophy

JEE Main Reservation Criteria in Institutes of National Importance

There are various institutes that take up admissions into engineering courses through JEE Main, and they have their own reservation criteria. Talking about the Institutes of national importance, given below are the JEE Main 2024 reservation criteria for such institutes:

  • Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) - All the IITs run under the central government and they follow the AIQ while offering admissions into engineering courses.

  • Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) - Admissions into IITs rely on All India Quota, Home State Quota, and Other State Quotas.

  • Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs) - For getting admissions into GIFTs, there is an All India Quota basis except for Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi and IIEST Shibpur.

However, candidates can claim for the home state quota and other state quotas in Assam University, Silchar, where the home state quota is applicable for candidates belonging to Assam and others on An India basis.

  • National Institutes of Technology (NITs) - National Institutes of Technology (NITs) offer engineering admissions as per State Quota and Other State Quota basis.

JEE Main Reservation Criteria 2024 For NITs

The National Institutes of Technology (NITs) provides admission to 50% seats to the Home State Quota students and for the remaining 50% seats to the Other State Quota students.

Note: For Union Territories and states which don't have NIT, the following NITs will be deemed as their state quota.

For NIT Goa and NIT Warangal, the JEE Main Reservation Criteria are mentioned below:

NIT Warangal:

  1. Home State Quota – Applicants whose home state is Telangana can apply for admission under this reservation criteria.

  2. Other State Quota – Candidates who belong to Andhra Pradesh and other states can apply for admission under this reservation criteria.

  3. Andhra Pradesh Quota – Candidates whose home state is Andhra Pradesh can apply for admission under this reservation criteria.

NIT Goa:

  1. Home State Quota – 40% of those students will be taken into consideration whose home quota state is Goa and in case, if there are any vacant seats, 10% seats will be given to students from Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu, and Lakshadweep.

  2. Other State Quota – Students who belong to Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu and Lakshadweep can apply for admission process under this quota.

JEE Main Reservation Criteria For Women Aspirants

The reservation criteria of JEE Main for women students are as mentioned below:

  1. Almost all engineering colleges in India will have a reservation of a minimum of 5% seats for women. In order to claim this policy, JEE Main female aspirants should apply under this Quota System.

  2. JEE Main female applicants who come under the category of PwD will get an additional 3% reservation in top engineering colleges of India.

  1. JEE Main 2024 reservation criteria are followed by the eligibility and reservation rules and directions set by the Government of India.

  2. Students who are seeking admissions into NITs, IITs and GFTIs under the reservation categories will be provided to only those classes/ castes/ tribes which will be in the respective central list published by the government of India.

  3. Students who are applying for admission into the state engineering colleges accepting JEE Main 2024 scores will be given reservation as per the reservation rules set by the state government.

Procedure for Claiming Reservation in JEE Main 2024

Aspirants who belong to the reserved categories have to follow the steps stated below to be able to claim reservation as per the JEE Main reservation criteria 2024.

  1. While filling the application form of JEE Main exam 2024, students must clearly specify their category in the appropriate section.

  2. During the counselling procedure, students must be able to produce valid proof of their respective categories such as a relevant caste certificate or category certificate.

  3. Students who are not able to present a valid certificate will be deemed to be under the unreserved category, and their reservation claim shall be cancelled.

Required Documents for Reservation Criteria

Applicants will have to present the mentioned document to claim reservation according to the JEE Main reservation criteria:

  1. Category certificate duly issued by the competent authority in an authorised format.

  2. PwD candidates are required to submit the disability certificate.
