Introduction to P Block

The block p is the final and smallest of the blocks in an atom. It contains 18 elements:

  • Eight monotonic (1) ions

  • Seven diatomic molecules

  • Two sets of three elemental isotopes each

  • Three groups of two elemental isotopes each

The block itself contains only one set of seven IUPAC-defined transition metals in their lower energy states. The chemistry of the P-Block is primarily that of transition metal atoms and ions and metals with low ionization energies. (which contains hydrogen), and assuming lanthanides to be zero (Lanthanides exist in the d-block, below Z=57), it can be argued that the P-block elements make up our "common" metals. P block elements have their number of electrons in the outermost s-orbital equal to their group number, plus two. The chart below shows the electron configuration for each block component (the two elements technetium and promethium are not familiar, occurring only in trace amounts; their electron configurations are included for completeness).

What is P Block?

The fourth chemical period of the periodic table consists of 18 elements, traditionally known as the p-block. The electrons in the outermost electron shell of these elements form a configuration of p orbitals, hence the name. The block itself contains only one set of seven IUPAC-defined transition metals in their lower energy states. The chemistry of the P-Block is largely that of transition metal atoms and ions and metals with low ionization energies and high ionic radii (such as Pt and Pd). The seventh period, group 14, elements are called the p-block. These elements tend to form cations with a +2 charge which are large, with sizes between those of group 13 and group 15 elements.
