JEE Main 2023 31 January Shift 1 and 2 - Question Paper Analysis

Based on the initial feedback from students, Shift 1 and 2, both papers were easy to moderate in overall difficulty level, and both shifts had the Maths section as lengthy and time-consuming. Shift 1 was as expected according to the analysis of the previous shifts, while Shift 2 paper was easier than that last year’s.


Where Physics was the easiest in the Morning Shift, the Chemistry paper was the easiest in the Evening Shift. Maths in the second shift was tougher than the previous shifts. In shift 1, Organic chemistry was the dominating one, while in Shift 2, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry had equal weightage.


There were more formula-based and numerical-based questions in both shifts. Most of the paper in both shifts was based on the fundamental concepts of NCERT textbooks. Thus, students who had practised well from the NCERT textbooks were able to solve most questions without difficulty.

1. Were previous year questions repeated?

Yes. Some questions were similar to the previous years’ papers, majorly in Shift 2 of 31 January JEE Main 2023 exam. There was almost no repetition in the Morning shift.

Both shifts of the 31 January JEE Main 2023 exam were comparable on many parameters, with Maths being lengthy in both shifts. However, based on the difficulty level, Shift 2 was tougher than Shift 1.
