An Introduction to KVPY

The Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is a scholarship program examination started in the year 1999. KVPY was started by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and is conducted by the Indian Institute of Science (IISC). The main aim of this program is to identify the talent in the students and encourage them to pursue their careers in the field of research.

The program of KVPY mainly aims to assist the students in realizing their potential at the national level and it also makes sure that the best scientific talent is groomed for the field of research and development in the country. Contingency grants and generous scholarships are provided for the selected KVPY Fellows up to the level of pre Ph.D or up to a period of five years. In addition to providing scholarships and grants, KVPY makes sure to organize summer camps for the KVPY candidates in the country's most prestigious and educational institutes.

The Department of Science and Technology which is the nodal agency of the government has entrusted the overall responsibility for organizing and running the KVPY Program to the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and they have been entrusted to set up a management committee and a National Advisory Committee (NAC) to oversee the implementation.

The exam for the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) has been postponed until further notice. The admit card for the KVPY test was released, and the exam was set for the 1st week of January, 2023. Despite the fact that the authorities have not issued any formal notice of the postponement, they have posted an alert on their official website confirming it. Candidates should review previous year's question papers before sitting for the exam.

KVPY Previous Year Paper Analysis

To crack the KVPY 2022, the major key is to revise the basic topics from the NCERT books thoroughly. The SA stream of the KVPY exam was considered to be time-consuming, moderate, and tricky. The Mathematics and Physics section was easier compared to the Chemistry section.

  • Important Topics in Chemistry: There are 14 questions in this section and most of these questions are moderate enough. The most repetitive or the dominating topics of this stream were the mole concept, physical chemistry(Class X), and organic chemistry(class XII).

  • Important Topics in Physics: The physics section also has 14 questions to its name and all the questions in this section were found to be very easy and direct. Most questions were from the topics of optics and mechanics in this section.

  • Important Topics in Mathematics: 25% of the total weightage of the examination is held by Mathematics. It has 13 questions and all the questions are very easy. Coordinate Geometry and Straight Line are the most important topics in this section.

  • SB/SX stream KVPY examination has a similar pattern and preparation strategy. Last year’s SB/SX stream KVPY paper has been reviewed below. The level of SB/SX stream KVPY examination was between the level of easy and moderate. The Mathematics paper was considered to be the most difficult paper in the whole section of the exam. Both Physics and Chemistry papers were easy whereas the Biology paper was moderate.

  • Important Topics in Mathematics - The mathematics paper was the most difficult one and it had 19 difficult questions to its name. The most dominating topics in this paper were Calculus (Differential and Integral), Definite Integration, and Binomial Theorem.

  • Important Topics in Biology - Biology paper was moderately difficult in nature and all 32 questions were of the same level. Biomolecules and molecular genetics were the topics from which most questions appeared in the examination.

  • Important Topics in Physics - The Physics paper had 21 questions and all the questions were very easy to score. Mechanics, Electrodynamics, and optics were the most important topics from which most questions appeared.

  • Important Topics in Chemistry - The Chemistry section was found to be very easy in the examination. There were 18 questions and all were very easy to answer. Most of the questions appeared from topics such as Inorganic Chemistry (Class XII), Organic Chemistry (Class XII), and Physical Chemistry (Class XI).

KVPY Scholarships

  • There are two KVPY scholarships that are offered to the students who attempt the exam in any of the three streams under KVPY. The streams are SA, SB, and SX.

  • The candidates who are part of or included in the SA stream are the ones who have applied to participate in the KVPY exam while pursuing class XI with the science subjects.

  • The candidates who have passed or are appearing in class XII with science subjects for the academic year 2022 are included in the SX stream.

  • The candidates who are appearing for pursuing the first year of the undergraduate program in basic science during the academic year of 2022 are included in the SB stream.

  • The KVPY Scholarship is immediately stopped if the aspirants leave the basic science courses such as B.Sc/ B.S./ B. Stat./ B.Math./ Int. M.Sc./ M.S. stream at any stage. The annual contingency grant will also be stopped for the student if he or she leaves any of the above-mentioned basic science courses.

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

1. Is KVPY Harder Than JEE?

The JEE Mains is considered to be moderate than the KVPY. KVPY is considered to be tougher than JEE Mains. KVPY is a scholarship program that is offered by the IISC to take admission in the research program. KVPY helps in nurturing and growing the best minds that are interested in the basic sciences program. When it comes to JEE mains, it tests the ability of the candidate to apply the skills of the concepts they have learned. JEE Mains is considered to be easier and it does not require to have an in-depth knowledge of any particular concepts whereas only the basic concepts are enough to crack the test. KVPY students also get stipends for their purposes which makes this exam more competitive and hence a little bit tough.

2. What are the benefits of KVPY?

The benefits of the KVPY Scholarship are listed below:

  • A candidate who has cleared the KVPY exam will receive a scholarship which can be monthly or yearly during the basic science course which is a three years or five years integrated course.

  • The title of being a KVPY scholar is a big deal as it provides direct admission to top institutes like the IISc and the various IISERs. Candidates can also get direct admission into IIIT-Hyderabad.

  • The KVPY exam is a good opportunity for the JEE aspirants to test the conceptual understanding and the application of the logic behind the various problems.

  • NEET aspirants can also test their PCB conceptual knowledge through the KVPY examination.

  • KVPY scholars are allowed to get free entry to all the National libraries in the country. The candidate is also allowed to attend all the science camps.

3. How many students are selected in KVPY?

A total of 4068 candidates were selected in 2019 for the interview round and around one lakh students appeared for the KVPY test. The final result of the meritorious students who are now eligible to avail of the KVPY scholarship will be released after the interviews of the shortlisted candidates are done in the first week of January 2022.

4. What is the minimum marks to qualify in KVPY?

There are few major factors that affect the cut-off to qualify for the KVPY examination. Examination difficulty level, availability of scholarships, highest marks, and the lowest marks scored by the students are the factors that eventually affect the cut-off. Below a list is given that has shown the different cutoffs based on the category:

General merit and the cut off percentage:

  • For the SA stream-53% and above.

  • For the SX stream-55% and above.

  • For the SB stream-50% and above.

For the SC/ST students in the KVPY scholarship programs and their cutoff marks:

  • For the SA stream-42% and above.

  • For the SX stream-45% and above.

  • For the SB stream-40% and above.

For PWD students in the KVPY scholarship programs and their cutoff marks or percentage:

  • For the SA stream-42% and above.

  • For the SX stream-45% and above.

  • For the SB stream-40% and above.

5. How to prepare for KVPY?

Given below are a few of the preparation tips that the students can follow while they prepare for the KVPY exam 2022.

  • Know the complete exam pattern. The candidate should be able to know the entire exam pattern. Knowing the exam pattern will allow the candidate to score well in the examination.

  • Make a complete study plan by dividing the subjects throughout the day. This will allow the students to complete the syllabus before the due date.
