By now, all of us know about the novel coronavirus that has disturbed the social fabric almost everywhere. This virus has infected over 3 lakh individuals, and till now around 14,000 lives have been lost. The World Health Organisation has declared it to be a pandemic and has advised governments around the world to implement strict contingency measures to contain the spread of this virus. Consequently, governments of several countries are asking their citizens to stay at home and practise social distancing. 

India too has followed suit and taken urgent steps to limit the spread of this virus. Governments of states across India where coronavirus cases have been reported are taking stringent measures such as – 

  • Shutting down all schools, colleges, universities and postponing examinations.

  • Banning mass gathering by invoking Section 144.

  • Closing all businesses except emergency sectors like food, medicine, pharmacies, and telecom services.

  • Asking private sector employees to work from home if possible.

  • Banning all intercity transport and suspending passenger train service.

Besides these measures, the government of India has also invoked the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897 to deal with this coronavirus outbreak crisis.

How can Students Keep Themselves Safe and Healthy During this Coronavirus Crisis?

Since no coronavirus medicine or vaccine has been discovered yet, self-quarantining is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of exposure to this virus. Nevertheless, staying at home for an extended period could have adverse effects on both mental and physical health of an individual. 

It is especially crucial for students who are keeping up with their studies from home. They need to stay fit, which will enable them to concentrate on their studies more. Also, staying fit will improve one’s immunity which is essential to reduce the risk of catching coronavirus infection.

Here are some of the tips that students must integrate within their daily lifestyle to stay fit – 

  • Regular Exercises – Because of coronavirus, most students cannot go out to play with their friends like they used to which can frustrate them. On top of that, staying inside all day will affect their health and lower their immunity. Hence, they must do some simple exercises or yoga every day, which will keep them fit and help in releasing some of the pent-up energy. They can even go for walks or run around the neighbourhood for a few minutes. However, they must maintain a six feet distance between them and any other person on the road to avoid catching coronavirus infection.

  • Healthy Meals – Apart from regular exercise, students should incorporate healthy and nutrient-rich food like fruits, vegetables, whole grain, dairy and protein within their diet. It will help them to stay fit during this period. Eating healthy will also improve their immune system, which will reduce the risk of getting infected. They should also refrain from overconsuming snacks and soda-based drinks which can be extremely unhealthy. 

  • Adequate Sleep – Getting sufficient sleep is an integral part of staying fit. It is as much important as having a healthy meal and exercising regularly. However, students often neglect this fact preferring to study late at night and then getting up early in the morning to study again. Students should make sure that they are getting enough sleep each day. Proper sleep is crucial since it helps the brain to function better. It also improves their focus which will enable them to grasp difficult topics more quickly. Students should sleep for a minimum of 8 hours to ensure that they stay fit.

  • Maintaining Personal Hygiene –Students should strictly maintain their health during this coronavirus outbreak to avoid getting infected. Not only that, following personal hygiene will ensure that they are not transmitting the virus to others. These include – 

I. Washing Hands Regularly 

Germs of infectious diseases like Covid-19 are mainly transmitted via unclean hands. Hence it is essential to wash hands as often as possible; especially after coming from outside, after coughing or sneezing, touching garbage, touching pets or other animals and before eating food. One should scrub their hands thoroughly for 20 seconds with soap and running water to clean their hands. 

While washing, one should also remember to scrub in between the fingers and under their nails to get rid of germs properly. In situations where soap and water are not easily accessible, students should use a hand sanitiser containing 60-95% alcohol to disinfect their hands.

Additionally, one should also avoid touching their mouth, eyes or nose with their unclean hands if they have recently touched something that is used by a lot of people. It is because coronavirus can stay active on different surfaces and objects for several hours. Hence, a healthy person might get infected if he or she comes into contact with such contaminated surface.

II. Cover your Mouth while Sneezing or Coughing – 

Coronavirus infection spreads via droplets which are released when someone sneezes or coughs. Hence it is essential to cover one’s mouth while sneezing or coughing to prevent the virus from spreading. It is advised that one should avoid covering their mouth with their hands while sneezing and instead sneeze into a tissue, handkerchief or in their elbow. Students should remember to throw away the used tissue immediately in a closed bin.

  • Staying Connected with Friends and Family by Virtual Means – Mental health is as much important as physical health. Human beings are social animal by nature, and we need to be around our friends and family to stay happy. So even if you have to maintain social distance now to avoid coronavirus, you can still stay connected with your friends and family over social media. It will facilitate better mental health and help you to stay focused during these anxious times. 

Coronavirus Symptoms

Apart from following a healthy lifestyle and staying fit, students should also know about the common coronavirus symptoms which are listed below – 

  • Fever

  • Dry cough

  • Runny nose 

  • Difficulty in breathing

  • Body ache 

  • Other symptoms may include diarrhoea

  • As per latest coronavirus update, loss of sense and smell can also be a symptom of coronavirus

Individuals may be infected with coronavirus disease before developing symptoms. It usually takes 2-14 days for symptoms to appear. Students should maintain a distance from anyone exhibiting these symptoms to avoid catching the virus.

On the other hand, if they are experiencing mild symptoms, they should immediately isolate themselves to keep everyone around them safe. It is vital because coronavirus does not affect everyone the same way. Some may experience only mild symptoms and recover on their own. Others, especially older people and people with pre-existing conditions, are more severely affected and may need to be hospitalised and put on supportive care.
