You add when you have two positive integers like (+3) + (+2) = +5 (= 3 + 2). You also add when you have two negative integers, but the answer will take a minus (–) sign like (–2) + (–1) = – (2+1) = –3.
When there is one positive and one negative integer, the subtraction will take place and the sign should be of a greater number. (Ignoring the signs of the numbers decides which is bigger).
Numbers such as 3 and – 3, 2, and – 2, when added to each other give the sum zero. These are known as the additive inverse of each other.
To subtract an integer from another integer it will be just enough to add the additive inverse of the integer that is being subtracted, to the other integer.
