Exercise 5.8

1. Examine whether the following are polygons. If any figure is not a polygon, then state the reason.

  1. The shape is as follows.

Open Figure

Ans: A polygon is a closed figure formed by line segments. The given figure is not a closed figure; hence it is not a polygon.

  1. The shape is as follows.

Polygon

Ans: A polygon is a closed figure formed by line segments. The given figure is a closed figure which is formed by six-line segments.Hence, it is a polygon.

  1. The shape is as follows.

Circle

Ans: A polygon is a closed figure formed by line segments. The given figure is not a polygon because it is not made up of line segments. Hence, it is not a polygon.

  1. The shape is as follows.

Quadrilateral

Ans:A polygon is a closed figure formed by line segments. The given figure is not a polygon because even though it is made up of line segments it has a curved surface. Hence, it is not a polygon.

2. Name each of the following polygons. Give two examples of each type of figure.

  1. The polygon is as follows.

Polygon

Ans: A polygon is a closed figure formed by line segments. The given polygon is made up of four line segments. Thus, it is a quadrilateral. The two quadrilaterals are as follows.

Polygon

  1. The polygon is as follows.

Polygon

Ans: A polygon is a closed figure formed by line segments. The given polygon is made up of  three-line segments. Thus, it is a triangle. Two examples of triangles are as follows.

Polygon

  1. The polygon is as follows.

Polygon

Ans: A polygon is a closed figure formed by line segments. The given polygon is made up of five-line segments and it is a closed figure. Also, a polygon with 5 sides is called a pentagon. Thus, the given figure is a pentagon. Two more examples are as follows.

Polygon

  1. The polygon is as follows.

Polygon

Ans: A polygon is a closed figure formed by line segments. The given polygon is made up of eight-line segments. and it is a closed figure. Also, a polygon with 8 sides is called an octagon. Thus, the given polygon is an octagon. Two more examples of octagon are as follows.

Polygon

3. Draw a rough sketch of a regular hexagon. Connect any three of the vertices. Draw a triangle, and identify the type of triangle you have drawn.

Ans: A hexagon is a figure formed by six-line segments. Label it with the name $ABCDEF$.

Hexagon

Now, join any two vertices, say $AE$ to form a triangle, $AFE$.

Hexagon

The figure is a regular hexagon so all sides are equal. Thus, $AF = FE$. We can see that $AE$ is not equal to $AF$, and $FE$. A triangle with two equal sides is called an isosceles triangle. Here, the triangle, $\Delta AFE$ has two equal sides. Therefore, $\Delta AFE$ is an isosceles triangle.

4. Draw a rough sketch of a regular octagon. (Use squared paper if you wish). Draw a rectangle by joining exactly four of the vertices of the octagon.

Ans: An octagon is a figure formed by eight-line segments. Label it with the name $ABCDEFGH$.

Octagon

Now, join any two vertices, say $GD$, and $HC$ to form a rectangle, $CDGH$.

Octagon

The required rectangle is $CDGH$.

5. A diagonal is a line segment that joins any two vertices of the polygon and is not a side of the polygon. Draw a rough sketch of a pentagon and draw its diagonals.

Ans:A pentagon is a polygon formed with five-line segments. Label it with the name $ABCDE$.

Polygone

To draw the diagonals join the opposite vertices, say, $A$ with $C$ and $D$, $E$ with $B$ and $C$, and $B$ with $D$.

Polygone

The diagonals are, $AC$, $AD$, $EB$, $EC$, and $DB$.
